How To Snake Basement Floor Drain

Basement floor drains play a crucial role in protecting your home from water damage. These drains collect and divert water to the city sewage system, preventing flooding in your basement. However, clogs in these drains can cause major issues. To keep your basement floor drain functioning smoothly, it’s essential to regularly snake it.

Gather the necessary tools, including a snake or auger, a bucket, a plunger, and protective gloves. Begin by locating the cleanout plug of your drain pipe, usually found near the top of the pipe, and remove it with a wrench. Place a bucket under the plug to catch any water that may escape.

Insert the auger into the drain pipe and use it to break through any clogs by turning the handle clockwise. If you don’t have an auger, you can use a plunger by placing it over the drain opening and pushing it down several times to dislodge the clog.

Once the clog is removed, reattach the cleanout plug and flush the drain with hot water. This ensures that all debris is cleared and your basement floor drain is running efficiently.

With these simple steps, you can easily maintain your drain, avoiding costly plumbing repairs and ensuring that your basement stays dry and protected.
