# How to Prep Your Garage Floor for Epoxy Paint

When it comes to protecting your garage floor from wear and tear, epoxy paint is one of the best options. Epoxy paint provides a strong, durable coating that resists chemicals and other damage, making it the ideal choice for garages. However, before you can apply epoxy paint to your garage floor, you must first prep the surface correctly. To get the most out of your epoxy floor paint, follow this guide to properly prepare your garage floor for epoxy paint.

## Clear Out Your Garage

Before you start prepping your garage floor, you need to clear out anything that is on it. This includes furniture, toys, tools, and any other items that are blocking access to the floor. Once everything is removed, clean up any dirt or dust that has accumulated on the surface with a broom or vacuum cleaner. Make sure you get into all of the corners and crevices to remove as much debris as possible.

## Repair Cracks and Holes

Once the surface is cleared and cleaned, take a look at it and identify any cracks or holes that need to be repaired. If there are large holes in the floor, use a concrete patching compound to fill them in. If there are only small cracks or chips in the floor, use an epoxy filler instead. Both materials come in tubs or tubes and can be applied easily with a putty knife or trowel. Once all of the cracks and holes have been filled in, let them dry completely before continuing with the prepping process.

## Remove Oil Stains

Oil stains are common in garages due to leaking vehicles or spills from tools or other items. To remove these stains before prepping your garage floor for epoxy paint, use a degreaser or oil remover specifically designed for concrete surfaces. Follow the instructions on the product label and use a stiff brush or scrubber to agitate the product into the stained area. Once all of the oil has been removed, rinse off the degreaser with water and allow the area to dry completely before proceeding.

## Grind Down High Spots

Epoxy paint needs to be applied evenly across the entire garage floor surface in order for it to adhere properly. To ensure that this happens, it is necessary to grind down any high spots on the surface so that everything is even. You can rent a concrete grinder from most home improvement stores or hire a professional contractor to do this work for you. Be sure to wear protective gear (eyewear, gloves, face mask) when operating a grinder and clean up any debris created during this process before continuing.

## Clean Again

Once all of the high spots have been ground down and removed, it is important to clean up any dust or debris left behind before applying epoxy paint. Sweep up any loose particles on the surface with a broom and then mop it down with a wet mop and some mild detergent or degreaser. Rinse off any residue with clean water and let it dry completely before applying epoxy paint to your garage floor.

Preparing your garage floor for epoxy paint may seem like a daunting task at first glance but it doesn’t have to be complicated. By following these simple steps, you can ensure that your garage floor will be ready for epoxy paint application and will remain durable for years to come!
